Meike Legler is a contemporary textile artist who lives and works in Vienna. Known for her colorful compositions, she uses fabrics that she treats with paint, dyes and bleach, as well as textiles with different textures. She processes these into artistic, layered images that she stretches over wooden frames like canvases. For Meike, fabrics are what paint is to a painter: through various techniques such as painting, bleaching, embroidering and dyeing, she transforms their neutral appearance into works full of depth and character.
Her artistic inspiration comes from her fascination with the mystery of our existence, the question of life after death and the interconnectedness of all beings. She is also inspired by phenomena from astrophysics and aspects that cannot be explained. For her, creating art is a way to reconcile the unknown spiritual world with reality and to preserve handcraft as a contrast to the digital world.
