Meike Legler
Meike Legler is a contemporary textile artist who lives and works in Vienna. Known for her colorful compositions, she uses fabrics that she treats with paint, dyes, and bleach, as well as textiles with different textures. She transforms these into elaborate, layered images that she stretches over wooden frames like canvases. For Meike, fabrics are what paint is to a painter: through various techniques such as painting, bleaching, embroidering, and dyeing, she transforms their neutral appearance into works full of depth and character.
Her artistic inspiration stems from a fascination with the mystery of our existence, the question of life after death, and the interconnectedness of all being. Phenomena from astrophysics and aspects that cannot be explained also inspire her. For her, creating art is a way to reconcile the unknown spiritual world with reality and to preserve craftsmanship as a contrast to the digital world.
Meike has exhibited internationally, including at Ladies' Room in Los Angeles, the Annika Nuttal Gallery in Aarhus, Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Artmovement in Los Angeles, and the Show Gallery in Hollywood. Her works are held in various private national and international collections.
